About me

Thoughts on Science and Philosophy.

My name is Sandip (pronounced Sun + Deep) and the similarity of the first word of the blog name with my first name is intentional. Here, I will be discussing my thoughts on Science and Philosophy in simple, informal and conversational manner. I am also an artist and a painter. I will be posting some of my art here as well.

I am a software professional and love computing. However, my passion is understanding the universe through science of Physics, Chemistry and Biology. I am also interested in higher level, applicable sciences to understand humanity and life. And that is fine by me.

I am also enthusiastic about the modern technology that drives our modern societies. The invention of the Internet (platforms like videos and podcasts) has made it possible to access the cutting edge thoughts in the field of Science and Philosophy (and other subjects) which previously was generally accessible in the context of academic institutions. The advantage of these platforms is that many times the discussion of deep topics takes place in conversational and conceptual manner - which makes it possible for a curious lay person, not steeped in advanced mathematics, to begin to understand the topics. It has been a great democratizing effect. However, we should not undervalue the tremendous hard work the academicians have put in. There is no substitute for hard work. And I respect it tremendously. Having said that we can not and should not rule out valid, rational arguments and proposals made by a lay person as long as it can withstand the rigorous objective verification.

We must recognize that the technology is a double edge sword. The immediate benefits that the technology provides are very seductive. The negative effects of the technology are sometimes long term. We must balance those two aspects. I think it is very important to moderate the application of technology with our progressive thinking based on fairness and equality.

I am a Physicalist and think that, in principle, the universe is understandable though objective scientific inquiry. We are not close to the full understanding yet but we have come a long way in short recent history of humanity. And I think that is simply awesome!

I think that applicability of meaning and purpose are not monolithic and can be applied at various levels - and there is nothing wrong with that.

That which can be asserted without proof can be dismissed without explanation.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof.
